Legendary Rwandan musician Marie Jean Mukankuranga, known in music as Mariya Yohana, has expressed her desire to stage a concert celebrating Rwandan liberation on an annual basis.

The 82-year-old will unveil her latest sophomore studio album, "Inkera y’Abahizi,” in a pre-liberation concert scheduled for Thursday, July 3 at Intare Conference Arena, Rusororo.

She will be flanked on stage by local music stars like Bruce Melodie, Butera Knowless, Samora Machelle SMS, Tonzi, Tom Close, and poet Junior Rumaga who are all set to perform.

"It is my wish that this concert becomes an annual event—and I will make it happen. I ask you to pray for me so that God continues to give me life and strength,” the Intsinzi hitmaker said in a press briefing last week.

While the concert will officially mark Mariya Yohana’s 40 year in music, it will also serve as a special occasion to pay tribute to President Paul Kagame and the RPF-Inkotanyi for their visionary leadership and contribution to Rwanda’s liberation.

Asked whether the President would attend her concert, she responded, "I invited President Paul Kagame, but due to his busy schedule, I don’t know yet if he will attend. If he comes, it will be a great joy for us.”

Prior to the concert, poet Junior Rumaga said it will be a privilege to share a stage with a legendary musician who inspires him a lot musically and beyond.

"Let's make July 3 an unforgettable day. Because getting the chance to celebrate with this amazing mother (Mariya Yohana) is truly something special. Let’s come together and continue to honor the commitment we’ve made,” he said.
