Preliminary studies to have a wholesale market of Rwandan fresh produce were completed and implementation is waiting for finances from the Rwanda Private Sector (RPF).

During the recent US Africa Business Summit, Rwanda presented the project as an investment potential and many of the delegates picked interest, according to officials.

The wholesale market will provide most up to date information and news about fresh fruits and vegetables that are available in the country.

In an interview with the Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources, Agnes Kalibata, said that the project will benefit consumers. The Minister also said that the project is a good opportunity for farmers to offer fresh produce with good prices.

"It will be easy for traders who want large quantities of consumables instead of collecting them across the country and also farmers will get value for their produce,” she said.

According to Kalibata, the Kigali whole sale market for fresh produce will be located in Masaka Gasabo district. The development of a modern fresh produce wholesale market in Kigali city will also serve regional and international markets.

Kalibata urged private sector to embrace the project because  nationally it will attract employment and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).

Kalibata said that the project is so interesting and is a big investment potential where an investor can decide to invest in a block depending of his capacity.

The project will be implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture through Rwanda Horticulture Development Authority (RHDA) jointly with Private Sector Federation.
