Kigali tops crime list

Kigali City has recorded the highest number of reported crimes in the month of September. According to the National Police Crime Report of September, of the 909 crimes committed across the country, 80 percent of the cases were reported in Kigali City.

Kigali City has recorded the highest number of reported crimes in the month of September.

According to the National Police Crime Report of September, of the 909 crimes committed across the country, 80 percent of the cases were reported in Kigali City.

The report said 158 were registered in Nyarugenge while 112 were recorded in Gasabo.

The Eastern Province comes second, with Nyagatare reporting 75 crimes while Northern Province comes in at fourth place with Burera district recording 42.  

Drug abuse remains the top crime with 236 cases registered, bringing the number of cases to slightly above 1700 registered since January. Assault and defilement follow with 190 and 177 cases respectively.

In the same month, 10 cases of murder were also registered.

Police spokesperson, Supt. Eric Kayiranga (Pictured) called on the public to play an active role in the fight against crime by reporting cases through the available channels of communication.

"The public knows most of the people dealing in these crimes, especially in drugs, and our partnership with them would help us track down all the criminals,” he said.
