Police vehicle kills one in fatal accident

MUSANZE/KIGALI – One person died while three others were critically injured when a speeding police vehicle heading to Kigali from Rubavu veered off the main road and knocked them on Tuesday night.

The accident happened at around 8.30 pm in Musanze town. Police Spokesperson Supt. Eric Kayiranga confirmed the accident, attributing it to fatigue on the part of the driver.

He added that the driver was arrested and is currently held by police in Musanze pending prosecution.

The deceased was identified as Leonia Musayidizi, 32, a cashier at Bank de Kigali-Musanze branch, while the injured are a woman only identified as Muhayimana, another employee of the same bank, Grace Mukeshimana and Julliet Mutambarungu-both employees of Umwarimu SACCO in Musanze.

Muhayimana was admitted at King Faisal Hospital in Kigali while the other two are admitted at Ruhengeri Hospital.
Speaking from the hospital, Mukeshimana recalled that she was standing by the road side at the time of the accident, and the vehicle threw them into a trench.

The deceased was buried yesterday at Ruhengeri cemetery at a ceremony attended by hundreds of mourners including friends, and relatives. She is survived by three children.
