NYAGATARE - The district has stepped up the fight against alcohol abuse by ordering the closure of bars selling local brew.

The decision was announced by the acting district Mayor, Anselme Majoro, during a district security meeting yesterday.

The Mayor explained that the decision followed numerous police reports that indicate consumption of the local brew was largely responsible for high crime rates in the area.
At the same meeting, grassroots leaders were blamed for being reluctant to fight crime.

The RDF Division One Commander, Major Gen. Fred Ibingira, used the occasion to advise sector leaders to speed up the construction of classrooms meant to support the 9-year Basic Education programme.

Gen. Ibingira noted that Rwandans should always spearhead the implementation of the country’s development initiatives.

"We should always act patriotically and if we commit to do something, let’s do it within the agreed time. We cannot fail to meet our goals if everybody of us is committed to do it,” he said.

He advised sector leaders to organise fundraising drives to raise resources that will speed up construction of classrooms.

Earlier, some local leaders had complained that the designated sites meant for classroom construction are not appropriate and therefore it was difficult to beat the end of year deadline.
