APR’s never give up attitude was on full display last evening as they pipped Kigali Volleyball Club (KVC) to the 2009 Carre’ d’AS title.
The league champions put in a splendid performance as they came from two sets down to outfox their arch-rivals 3-2 at a vibrant Amahoro Indoor Stadium.
It was undoubtedly one of the most captivating finals in Rwandan volleyball.
The military side looked dead and buried after the first two sets (23-25, 17-25) after failing to deal with Eric Nsabimana’s fierce spikes.
However, at the beginning of the third set, APR’s stand in coach Paul Bitok switched his front line offering a double block against the KVC captain and the move paid off instantly as the club stormed back into the contest by winning the next two sets (25-16, 25-18) to send the final into a decisive set which they ultimately swept 15-9.
After the shocking defeat, Nsabimana blamed his side’s complacency for the loss.
"In the first two sets, we were on top but then we switched off because we thought it was over. It is now clear that this team needs some reinforcement especially in attack,” a disappointed Nsabimana conceded.
For APR, the win wrapped up a hard earned treble after the league and Rutsindura Memorial titles.
Earlier, APR ladies had showed their male counterparts how it’s done when they crashed Rwanda National University (UNR) 3-0.
The winners in both categories pocketed Rwf0.2m while the first and second runners-up settled for Rwf150.000 and Rwf100.000 respectively.
