HUYE - Police in Tumba Sector are holding a man over alleged arson.

Martin Uwizeyimana, 29, allegedly deliberately torched a residential house he was renting.

"He [Uwizeyimana] came and started making noise. I immediately rushed to the scene and saw him setting fire on a pile of clothes, mattress and jerrycans,” Clarisse Mukeshimana, a resident of Rebero village said.

Security authorities said he would be charged with arson.
The landlord only identified as Bazambaza, said he was shocked when he learnt that his property had been razed down.

However, the suspect denied all the allegations leveled against him, arguing that the fire might have been started by someone else.

"When I arrived home the house was already on fire. I tried to call residents for support to contain the fire. Afterwards, they [residents] started accusing me of starting the fire,” Uwizeyimana said.

The Executive Secretary of Tumba Sector, Alphonse Mutsindashyaka noted that this was the first such an incident to have happened this year.

He called upon residents to actively participate in community policing as a way to guarantee their security.
