2022 World Cup: 5 young African players to look out for

Over the years, Africa has produced some great players who made their world cup debuts as youngsters. Mention can be made of Samuel Eto'o in 1998, Asamoah Gyan in 2006, Andre Ayew, in 2010, and many others.

There are a pool of talented African young players who were selected by their countries to participate in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Times Sport takes a look at five of these very good young players from Africa to look out for in Qatar.

Abdul Fatawu Issahaku (Ghana)

Born on March 8, 2004, Issahaku plies his trade for Sporting Lisbon in Portugal. The 18-year-old budding talent was named among the "Next Generation" best young footballers on earth by British news website Guardian in 2021.

The left-footed winger won the best player in the 2021 U20 AFCON held in Mauritania. He has already been capped eight times by Ghana at senior level, scoring one goal.

Hannibal Mejbri (Tunisia)

Mejbri has already tasted premier league action with Manchester United and he is hugely rated as part of the best young midfielders in England.

Born in January 21, 2003, Mejbri played for France at U16 and U17 levels, respectively, before deciding to switch to Tunisia in 2021.

He has already earned 18 caps for the Carthage Eagles and was also shortlisted by CAF for the best young player on the continent in 2021.



Bilal El Khannouss (Morocco)

Khannouss plies his trade with Belgian league leaders Genk.

Born in the Belgian city of Strombeek-Beever on May 18, 2004, he played for the European nation up to the U18 level before switching to Morocco where he started from the U20 level. Khannouss is capable of playing in both attacking and defensive midfield due to his versatility. Qatar is going to be his first senior tournament for the Atlas Lions.

In the 2022/23 season, he has already made 16 appearances for Genk providing one assist.

Pape Matar Sarr (Senegal)

Sarr is owned by English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur and is among their players tipped for future success.

He spent last season on loan at his former club Metz, in France where he made a total of 33 appearances, scoring one goal and providing three assists.

Born on September 14, 2002, the talented central midfielder has been capped 10 times by Senegal already and commands a place in the team.

Sarr was named by the Confederation of African Football as the best young player on the continent during the 2021 CAF awards.

Kamaldeen Sulemana (Ghana)

He is a dominant force in the French Ligue 1 for Stade Rennes.

Kamaldeen, born on February 15, 2002 in the Ghanaian business town of Techiman, joined Rennes in July 2021 from Danish outfit FC Nordsjaelland. He has already made 41 appearances scoring six goals and providing four assists.

The youngster can operate both on the right and left flanks and is well noted for his pace, skills and artistry.

On the international scene, he has been capped 12 times already by Ghana at senior level and was a nominee by the Confederation of African Football for the best young player on the continent during the 2021 CAF awards.
