In an effort to bring services of the National Police closer to Rwandans, government has unveiled plans to upgrade and construct nine police stations countrywide.

This was revealed to The New Times yesterday by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Internal Security, Penelope Kantarama.

She said the exercise will be gradual and to be implemented depending on the availability of funds but insisted government was determined to upgrade some stations and construct new ones.

She could not reveal how much government would be spending on this exercise.

"The exercise will be in phases and will depend on the availability of funds. The plan is to begin with three police stations.”

She said the tender for the construction works on Remera Police Station was issued but later halted by the Rwanda Public Procurement Authority (RPPA) for reasons she could not reveal.

In an earlier interview, the acting Commissioner General of police, Mary Gahonzire, said that a number of police stations were going to be upgraded to facilitate functional efficiency in the force.

She also said that plans are underway to renovate the former Kabuga building with an intention of making it the home of the police headquarters.
