Warm welcome awaits Francophone Games team

Rwanda’s team for this year’s Francophone Games will have a majestic welcome when they jet in this morning. According to the team’s delegation head, Emmanuel Bugingo, the 50-man delegation which finished seventh in the two-week long competition left Beirut yesterday and should arrive at Kigali international airport around 11.50pm aboard Ethiopian Airways.

Rwanda’s team for this year’s Francophone Games will have a majestic welcome when they jet in this morning.

According to the team’s delegation head, Emmanuel Bugingo, the 50-man delegation which finished seventh in the two-week long competition left Beirut yesterday and should arrive at Kigali international airport around 11.50pm aboard Ethiopian Airways.

Rwanda won three gold medals and two silver medals while France topped the charts with 23 gold medals, 9 silver and 17 bronze medals.

However, Disi who retained the Games’ 10,000m gold after clocking 29:38:68 is not part of the team. The 29-year-old flew to France yesterday to enhance his training ahead of future international competitions.

Disi was also named best athlete at the 2009 Francophone Games. He was awarded the ‘Assemblée Parlementaire de la Francophonie’ medal and a cash prize of €9000 (Rwf7.5m).

Epiphanie Nyirabarame also won gold in the 42.195km women marathon in a descent time of 2 hours, 44 minutes and 36 seconds while Claudette Mukasakindi also swept the women’s 10,000m.
