HUYE – Residents of Sovu Cell, Huye sector have joined hands to have their Cell connected to the national electricity grid. They say that electricity in the area has changed their way of life.

Through the Urumuri Cooperative, Sovu Cell members collected Rwf8million towards the electrification programme. The power line stretches an area of 12 kilometres.

"It was difficult to sell this idea to the local residents until we formed the Urumuri Cooperative. People realised that we were embarking on a serious project,” said Basile Uwizeyimana, the President of the cooperative.

"We have so far connected 45 families,” he added.
John Ruganintwari, a resident in the area said that on top of providing lighting, electricity connection has enhanced security in the cell.

"The whole area is now well lit at night making it difficult for thieves who came under the cover of darkness to steal,” Ruganintwari said.

Jean Batiste Mutabaruka, the Executive Secretary of Huye Sector noted that the electricity connection has transformed the way of life in the area.

"Business is booming now, hair salons have sprung up for instance. The neighboring cells have realised how electricity can change lives and are now pooling together funds to get connected,” said Mutabaruka.      

In her recent visit to the cell, MP Winifrida Niyitegeka commended the residents for their efforts in seeking solutions to their own problems instead of waiting for government assistance.
