MUSANZE - Twelve pupils of Kiryi Primary School in Musanze District sustained injuries after their classroom block was destroyed by heavy rain and raging storm last week.

Four of the children have since been  operated upon at Ruhengeri Hospital after sustaining severe bone fractures.
The rains coupled with an accompanying strong storm ripped off the roof of two classrooms which later on curved in.
All the 12 pupils were girls, as boys reportedly escaped without injuries through windows.

According to Dr John Karake, of Ruhengeri Hospital, the four children who under went an operation had internal leg fractures, two sustained injuries in the back while the rest sustained minor body injuries and have been discharged.

"We saw the roof descending down wards but it was difficult to escape, because of the strong storm. As we fought our way out, the roof caved in,’’ Namanze Beritrida, primary six pupil recounted from her hospital bed.

Sources say the classroom block had been constructed early this year. The same sources say that is possible that the structure had been poorly constructed.
