RWAMAGANA - A local defence guard in Rwamagana District was yesterday shot in the stomach by suspected robbers in what sources say was an attempted robbery.

The deceased, only identified as Noel, was shot in a scuffle while attempting to help his colleague, whom the robbers were trying disarm.

The incident happened at Muhazi sector offices.
Noel later died after being admitted at Rwamagana Hospital on his way to Kigali Central University Hospital where he had been referred.

Jean Pierre Muvunanyiko, another guard the robbers attempted to disarm, said:

"They came driving in a pick up truck at night disguised as clients in a nearby bar. Later one of the thugs came and sweet talked me for some minutes, before he jumped to disarm me.”

He added: "I was later joined by others after raising an alarm. People from the nearby community, came to my rescue, but unfortunately one colleague of mine was shot in the scuffle. I had cocked the gun ready to shoot before they got hold of me.”

One suspect identified as Randrie Uwineza, was arrested and detained at Rwamagana Police Station, in connection with the incident, while three other suspects are believed to be still at large.

Speaking from the police station however, Uwineza vehemently denied being part of the thugs.
