NYARUGURU - Health Minister, Dr Richard Sezibera on Thursday commended the district for its efforts to provide health care to its residents.

In meeting with district staff and Sector Executive Secretaries, the Minister noted that local leaders have a responsibility to fight ignorance which is a major cause of many preventable diseases.

The Minister called upon local leaders to sensitize their population on basic measures to fight diseases like ensuring that families have a balanced diet, hygiene in homes and the use of mosquito nets to prevent malaria.

Over 87 percent of the residents in the district are enrolled in the communal health insurance scheme-  Mutuelle de Santé. Nearly all Sectors in the district have health centres in addition to the referral hospital of Munini.

The Provincial Governor, Fidèle Ndayisaba, called upon staff to plant more fruit trees in their respective Sectors because of their health benefits.

Felix Sibomana, the District Mayor, lamented the lack of electricity and bad roads which slow health service delivery in the district.

Before meeting the district staff, Sezibera visited various development projects in the district.
