We all want good skin creams and lotions with the aim of restoring, or maintaining, that youthful appearance. For some, the aim is to combat early signs of ageing. However, what most of us are unaware of is that these skincare products might have certain limitations making it difficult to achieve that desired appearance. Health experts note that there are a variety of options one can follow for total skin rejuvenation without exposing your skin to harsh products. Total skin rejuvenation is all about the use of non-surgical treatments to target wrinkles, discoloration, acne, and scars, among others.

Importance

Dr Francoise Gahongayire, a dermatologist at King Faisal Hospital, says skin rejuvenation helps one look healthier and more youthful because it encourages the replacement of old, worn-out skin cells with new ones. He says that it’s normal for the skin at times to start looking old, wrinkled, and aged well before its time, for different reasons, adding that rejuvenating it can help reverse all these effects.

Dr Francis Kazungu, a general practitioner, says when it comes to the skin, it is the largest organ of the human body so taking good care of it requires keeping hydrated all the time. Skin rejuvenation treatments, he says, can help clear your skin of dirt and debris, and that cleansing it every now and then is an essential part of a good skincare routine for everyone.

Dr Kazungu says skin rejuvenation also helps improve the look of your skin once the treatment is done and the healing process is complete.

Dr Gahongayire says this can be good for people with dry, sun-worn facial skin to have some of the top layers of skin removed to make way for a clear-looking new skin formation. In addition, this treatment also helps get rid of acne scars, for those who have them.

"Skin rejuvenation treatments will dramatically work on removing acne scars as the process strips away the top layers of skin, this means it will take away a lot of acne-related scar tissue, leaving your skin clear,” she says.

Dr Kazungu says this also helps improve one’s confidence as it makes one look younger and more attractive, thus improving their social life in general, which has a positive impact on one’s well-being. Opting for a good lifestyle has also been proven to rejuvenate your skin naturally, for instance, eating clean, because good-looking skin comes from within, experts say. For this reason, watch what you eat.

Getting enough sleep is also essential as studies indicate that while you are sleeping, the body has repair mechanisms that swing into action. Not getting enough sleep puts stress on the body, causing it to release more adrenaline which can generate breakouts and other skin problems.

Exercising, drinking lots of water, protecting your skin from too much sunshine as well as avoiding stress are among other lifestyle changes that can help rejuvenate the skin.
