KAYONZA/RWAMAGANA – Government officials yesterday started the construction of new classroom blocks at different sites in the Eastern Province.

This is part of the efforts to implement the 9-year Basic Education Programme.

In Kayonza, the classroom construction was launched by the Minister of Public Service and Labour, Anastase Murekezi at Mukarange College.

Adressing a mammoth crowd, Murekezi advised parents to contribute selflessly to the completion of the classrooms.

"The efforts of parents in this noble initiative are paramount. You need to give support so that the classrooms are in place on time. They will serve your children,” he said.

The Mayor, Damas Muhororo, also emphasised that the role parents play is critical in the education of their children.
"Let every village show its contribution…by working in turn for the purposes of beating the set deadlines,” he said.

Meanwhile, in Rwamagana District, the construction was launched by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Public Service and Labour, Marceline Mukakarangwa, at Rwamagana Primary School. Six classrooms are under construction at this site.

According to the district Director of Education, Daniel Karinganire, the district expects to construct more than 100 classrooms by November.

Apart from the parents, the army and the police have volunteered to participate in the active construction of the classrooms.

‘The security organs will help us with machines to make bricks, trucks to carry sand and stones.

They will also actively be involved in the construction,” said Leonard Musonera Kiwanuka, the Mukarange Sector Executive Secretary.

The government has earmarked Rwf37 billion towards the construction of classrooms across the country.
