MUHANGA - Residents of Nyamabuye sector in Muhanga District have appealed to the water and power supply body (RECO-RWASCO) to address the existing water shortages in the area.

The residents have spent two weeks without water, which has affected various businesses especially the hospitality industry.

The most affected areas include; Gahogo, Nyabisindu, Gatika, Ruvumera. Due to the scarcity, some residents have had to travel long distances to fetch water from Rwansamira swamps.

‘Most people have resorted to fetching water here because it is clean and flowing having been constructed by residents under the ubudehe programme in 2007.

The numbers of users have increased and this has brought some pressures although leaders have tried to contain the situation,’ a resident said.

The Reco-Rwasco regional director, Marc B Runoro attributed the problem to the dry spell and decline in water levels within their reservoirs.

In the long term to forestall future shortages, he added, Reco-Rwasco in conjunction with the district authorities will increase the water catchments in the district.

He also predicted that the expected rains will be able to solve the current shortages.
