Radisson Blu Hotel and Kigali Convention Centre is once again partnering with Will Wilson, a wildlife and bird photographer, and Rwanda Cancer Relief to host the ‘Walk with Will’ initiative.

This marks the second year of the collaboration, following last year’s event on June 3, which initiated an essential conversation about the importance of early cancer detection.

Wilson, who has lived in Kigali for the past three and a half years, turned a personal experience into a powerful cancer awareness campaign.

His wife, Anna, who works for the British High Commission in Rwanda, was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2022 during a routine check-up. After undergoing treatment in the UK, Anna completed her treatment and returned to Rwanda cancer-free by October 2023.

At that same time, Wilson embarked on a journey to raise awareness. Using a treadmill and a bike, he covered a daily distance of 40 to 60 kilometres, symbolising the distance from Kigali to the hospital in London where his wife received treatment. Throughout this challenge, Wilson completed a total of 9,845 kilometres.

Event details

The 24-hour walk, scheduled from 10 am on May 3 to 10 am on May 4, aims to raise awareness about cancer and generate funds for Rwanda Cancer Relief’s efforts, including support for cancer survivors.

The event will take place at the Nyarutarama running track, near the golf course. In addition to the walk, a dedicated tent will offer cancer screenings, specifically for breast and testicular cancer.

Objectives of the event

The event's primary objective is to attract as many people as possible to participate in the walk and get screened for cancer.

Another goal is to collect donations to support the activities of Rwanda Cancer Relief in the fight against cancer.

Last year, the initiative raised over Rwf8 million. The goal this year is to double that amount.
