Renowned Burundian entertainer, DJ Ira, was Tuesday, April 15, officially granted a Rwandan nationality following a public request made directly to President Paul Kagame during a citizen outreach event at BK Arena, March 16.
Born Grace Divine Iradukunda in 1997, DJ Ira was raised in Gitega, Burundi, and relocated to Rwanda in 2015. Since launching her career in 2017, she has grown into one of Rwanda’s top female DJs, known for her energetic performances and inspirational rise in the entertainment industry.

During the national outreach event, which brought together thousands of citizens and government officials, DJ Ira stood up to express her admiration for Rwanda’s inclusive governance, especially its empowerment of youth and women. She publicly asked to be granted Rwandan nationality, stating that Rwanda had become a true home for her.
"I myself found a blessing in this country...so, my request, I would like to ask you for Rwandan nationality so that I can also be called a Rwandan citizen and become all yours,” said the disc jockey.
Thereafter, President Kagame responded; "In principle, I grant it to you. The rest can be followed up with due process.”

Following the presidential green light, DJ Ira went through the legal process, as per constitutional procedures, and was, along with 35 other people, granted Rwandan nationality after taking an oath in a ceremony that took place in Kigali on Tuesday, April 15. All 36 names were recently published in the Official Gazette issued on April 7, confirming their acquisition of Rwandan citizenship.
She shared the moment on her Instagram, captioning her photos with "Invugo ye niyo ngiro,” loosely translated as "He walks the talk”, in appreciation of Kagame’s prompt response and Rwanda’s welcoming spirit.
