NYAGATARE - The newly elected guild committee of Umutara Polytechnic University was last week sworn in to assume office for a one-year period.

At a cheerful ceremony held at the campus auditorium, sworn in were the students’ guild president Eric Buhire, vice president Dorocella Nirere, secretary general, Ben Nkwaya and a couple of representatives of different disciplines on the committee.

In an interview, Buhire promised to start a beauty pageant at  the college for the purposes of bringing the institution at par with others during his tenure.

"Initiating the miss campus beauty pageant is top on my leadership agenda.

I and my committee members will make sure that this first goal is achieved. We want to level our selves with other universities country-wide in this sort of thing,” he said.

He added that promoting unity, reconciliation and discipline among students will be some of  his other priorities.

Professor Phillip Brierly, the university Rector, who graced the ceremony, thanked students for organising free and fair elections for their leaders, describing it as a land mark in their future prospects.

He advised the elected leaders to perform their duties diligently, saying it was the platform to display their leadership skills as future leaders.

"The leadership you have been given today is a foundation of responsibilities…it builds your future competence in many disciplines,” he said.

The out going guild president, John Manzi thanked his team for the great job done during their tenure and advised the incoming leaders to build from foundation the previous team had built.

He also urged the new leadership to advocate for students’ rights.
