Government has intensified plans to deal with heavy floods expected in a few days ahead as the rain season begins.

According to latest regional meteorological forecasts, starting from next month, El Nino-induced rains are expected to hit hard, causing havoc in many parts of East Africa.

"In terms of preparations, we have already trained district disaster management committees in almost all districts apart from Kigali, which will come next,” said Chief Supt.

Damas Gatare, head of disaster management unit in the national Police.Gatare noted that seven officials at district level in all provinces have been trained.

"They are trained on how people can coordinate and work together on any type of disaster.

Right now, starting tomorrow, we are working with a consultancy firm to help us prepare a national preparedness plan.”

In the past, deadly floods and mudslides have hit the country, especially in the Western Province, where last year thousands were left homeless.

Farmlands in the country’s agricultural lowlands are expected to be affected.

Although no exact amount was disclosed, Gatare says the country has a contingency fund to help people who are affected.

Mid last month, a team of instructors from Kenya’s Humanitarian Peace Support School (HPSS) helped train the army, police, local government and health officials in disaster management skills.
