Rwanda international Glen Habimana says Kwibuka means a lot to the players born abroad as it serves as an opportunity for them to not only pay homage to the victims of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi but also show support to the survivors.

Born in Belgium, the Royal Hutoise striker told Times Sport that he uses the commemoration to reflect on his roots and also share part of the national sorrow.

"For many of us foreign-born Rwandans, the commemoration of the genocide against the Tutsi has a deeper personal meaning. It is not only a time to reflect on the suffering of our compatriots, but also an opportunity to show solidarity with the survivors and honor the victims,” the 23-year-old said.

"For someone who was born outside of Rwanda, the commemoration is also a way to connect with my roots and share the national grief, even if we were not directly present during the genocide."

Habimana who has been capped four times by Rwanda also entreated Rwandans to stay in unity as reconciliation is an important part of the healing process.

"My message to the Rwandan people would be that remembrance and reconciliation are essential to healing. The healing process is difficult, but it is possible through understanding, compassion and cooperation. "

The forward further praised Rwanda for making great strides in development and not letting the dark past be a hindrance to what they envision to achieve.

"Rwanda has made tremendous progress since the genocide, and it is inspiring to see how the country has built itself back with a focus on unity, peace and reconstruction. Let us continue to strive for a world where hatred has no place, where mutual respect and human dignity are always at the heart," he said.

Habimana has previously played for clubs including SK Lierse and Luxembourg outfit Victoria Rosports.
