RUSIZI – The local district authorities on Thursday launched a massive cattle vaccination exercise against foot and mouth, including related diseases. 

The exercise kicked off at Murangi football ground, in Kamembe sector, where over 200 cattle were vaccinated.

Speaking to The New Times, Marcel Habyarimana, the Rusizi vice Mayor for Economic Affairs, said that the vaccination is part of local leadership efforts to improve livestock production in the region.

The official called upon residents to always strive to improve on ways of looking after their cattle for the purposes of boosting livestock productivity.

Livestock farmers hailed the district and the government for the effort saying they were optimistic that it would improve animal husbandry in the region.

The exercise which is expected to go on for a week had residents paying Rwf500 for each head of cattle vaccinated.
