A driver died while 22 passengers were injured on Tuesday, April 8, when a minibus hit crash barriers in Huye District.

A driver died while 22 passengers were injured on Tuesday, April 8, when a minibus hit crash barriers in Huye District, according to police.

The Spokesperson for Traffic and Road Safety at Rwanda National Police, SP Emmanuel Kayigi, told The New Times that the accident involving a Toyota Coaster bus belonging to Volcano transport agency, occurred at 3:30 pm in Kagarama Village, Tare Cell, in Mbazi Sector.

Kayigi indicated that the accident was caused by failure to control the minibus' speed when it reached a road curve.

"It was heading to Nyamagabe District from Huye District, and when it reached the aforementioned area, the driver did not regulate speed, hence hitting crash barriers on the road, making the minibus turn over,” he said.

Among the 22 injured passengers, four sustained serious injuries, Kayigi said.

"Some of the injured were taken to the University Teaching Hospital of Butare (CHUB), others to Kabutare Hospital,” he said.

Kayigi reiterated that drivers should be careful by avoiding spending, respecting road signs, and driving responsibly, to prevent accidents.
