Kwibuka31: Journalists urged to uphold professionalism during commemoration period

As Rwanda marked the 31st commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, on Monday, April 7, Rwanda Media Commission (RMC) expressed solidarity with all Rwandans, calling on journalists and media houses to play a role in the nation-building journey and to uphold professionalism in their reporting during the commemoration period.

In a statement released on its X account, RMC urged media to uphold journalistic ethics and professional standards and avoid sharing misleading reports that distort historical facts or hinder national unity.

"During this period, we as journalists have a special responsibility to safeguard the truth and to fight against genocide ideology and all forms of unprofessional conduct,” RMC said.

Journalists cover a press conference ahead of Kwibuka 31 events.

The media self-regulatory body also called on media houses to give space to concerned people and entities in order to preserve historical truth and counter Genocide denialism, and use media as a channel for education and building a Rwandan society free from division.

The RMC also commended journalists and media houses that continue to demonstrate professionalism and contribute meaningfully to the journey of national rebuilding.
