The National University of Rwanda (NUR) was four years ago the pioneer of Rwanda’s Beauty pageants. However, this year the NUR Beauty contest will come last, as all major universities have already picked their respective beauty Queens.

"This year’s Miss NUR contest was delayed because the Rector Excellency Awards where the beauty contest falls was placed in the second Mini Budget of NUR, which began in July 2009.

Again, the management committee of the NUR which seats once a month had to approve it.” Explained Rwirangira .H, a.k.a  Bovich, president of the organizing group, Campus Initiative Promotion- CIP

Unlike the past, this year’s Rector Excellency Awards event will also recognize the best performer in the former National University of Rwanda Students’ Union-NURSU, the Guild body and the most innovative Student.

The action as usual will take place in the NUR’s Grand Auditorium on September 18. Unusually though, this time the action comes at a cost! Students will have to part with only RWF 1000, non students RWF2000 and the VIP section will go RWF 5000.

Asked why they are charging for this year’s beauty pageant, Bovich explained that, "they (CIP) have to build themselves financially such that they are able to organize future events without having to solicit money from corporate companies.”

When the first Miss NUR contest was held in 2006, Sharon  Akanyana took home the crown.

The following year Carine Rusaro emerged the victor after beating two other contestants. In 2008, Sandra Uwimbabazi had to fight off 9 contestants to be crowned Miss NUR 2008.

On the first day of registration, 3 girls had registered. The last day of receiving applications is September  13.
