Editor,

Allow me through your paper, to appeal to the authorities concerned to come to the rescue of the residents of Rugarama cell, in Nyabisindu , Remera sector in Gasabo district.

The residents of this area have been subjected to unlimited pollution, accidents and road degradation, all caused by people who use a  road section in the area for driving lessons.

In the past couple of years, this section of the road that is near the National Stadium and just below the Heroes’ Cemetery was used by Traffic Police for driving balance tests.

While this was also inconvenient to the residents, it took place once in a month or so, and residents could bear with it.

Today, the place has turned into a driving school ("Kuri Demurrage”, as the place is now called) with at least five cars driving back and forth every time you pass through the area.

Motor bikes are uncountable.

It should be noted that this is a residential area with a kindergarten just by the roadside.

Recently a kid was knocked by a Motorcycle and the motorist run away.

People who live near that section of the road have complained of eating dust filled food, sleeping in dusty beds and literally living in an extremely dust-polluted environment.

As if this is not enough, many idlers are around and often pick pockets and thieves mingle and steal residents’ property.

This part of the road that was repaired and paved some five years back and is often used to divert traffic whenever there are functions at the stadium; is now almost impassable.

Our efforts to find a solution at the cell level have been unsuccessful as leaders allege that the use of this road by trainees is sanctioned by police whom they don’t want to antagonize.

We need an urgent solution to this problem.
