Rwandan shoppers are about to experience retail on a whole new level as Sawa Citi proudly partners with SPAR International, a globally recognised supermarket chain operating in 48 countries including Rwanda.
This strategic franchise agreement marks the arrival of SPAR Rwanda, a brand committed to offering quality, variety, and convenience, powered by global experience and tailored for the local market. With over 13,600 stores worldwide and a daily customer base exceeding 14 million, SPAR brings unmatched expertise to the Rwandan retail landscape.
At the official opening of the first SPAR Rwanda store in Nyarutarama on Friday, Théogène Kubwimana, the CEO of Sawa Citi, stated that Sawa Citi, renowned for its deep understanding of the Rwandan consumer and its strong presence in the food and beverage retail sector, is now the official holder of the SPAR license in Rwanda.
"This collaboration opens up exciting opportunities to introduce a world-class shopping experience to Rwandan communities while supporting local producers and farmers through thoughtful sourcing strategies," said Kubwimana.
SPAR Rwanda aims to position itself as a premium yet affordable supermarket chain that caters to middle and upper income households, corporate clients, and expats in search of quality, imported, and international products.
From fresh produce and groceries to premium wines and exclusive SPAR private-label items, customers can expect a diverse, high-quality range that suits every lifestyle.
SPAR Rwanda's expansion plan aims to enhance accessibility by introducing SPAR supermarkets in Kigali and other major urban hubs, as well as SPAR Express stores at airports, petrol stations, and malls. Additionally, the company will launch a dedicated e-commerce platform, offering home delivery services to cater to busy professionals and on-the-go shoppers.
With these formats, SPAR Rwanda is set to serve a broad spectrum of consumer needs, making everyday shopping easier, faster, and more enjoyable.
In alignment with SPAR's global values, the Rwandan franchise will emphasise sustainability, eco-friendly packaging, and the reduction of food waste, while maintaining strong ties with local communities and suppliers. It's not just about retail; it's about creating shared value for Rwandans and setting new standards for modern commerce.
The SPAR slogan, "Better Together," reflects a cooperative spirit that resonates perfectly with Sawa Citi's own values. Together, this partnership represents a commitment to elevate retail experiences in Rwanda while empowering local stakeholders.
As SPAR Rwanda opens its doors, one thing is clear: this is not just another supermarket; it's a movement to redefine how Rwandans shop, eat, and live.
