KAYONZA - An armed man who allegedly tried to rob a businessman has been arrested and detained at Kabarondo Police Station in Kayonza District.

Abdul Karim Nsengimana, 25, was arrested on Monday at his home in Gikaya in Mukarange sector. Police recovered a gun with 14 bullets.

According to sources in the area, police acted on a tip off from one of Nsengimana’s former colleagues.

"The suspect is a notorious criminal who had just been released from prison; it is no wonder that he had a gun. He was jailed in Nsinda Prison for five years over various crimes,” security officials said.

At the police station, the suspect said he got the gun from Selman a resident of Ngoma District. "Our aim was to rob a businessman in Rwamagana,” he said.

Police said he would be charged with illegal possession of a fire arm and armed robbery-which attract 5- 15 years imprisonment upon conviction.

The Sector Executive Secretary, Leonard Kiwanuka Musonera, also said the suspect was a notorious criminal in the village.

"He is one of the young men that have been terrorising villages, and neighbouring towns.

They smoke marijuana and abuse all sorts of drugs, before they descend on their victims. The person who offered police leads is a former thug who seems to be rehabilitating,” Kiwanuka said.
