NYAGATARE - Women in Nyagatare District have been urged to sustain the fight against Genocide ideology in their respective communities.

An official of Women in Post Conflict Situations (WIPS), a project that works under the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA-Rwanda) made the call on Monday during a two-day workshop on Genocide ideology in Nyagatare.

Participants were briefed on the dangers of Genocide ideology, reconciliation process, and the role of women in fighting the vice.

Ilidephonse Karengera, one of the facilitators, observed that before colonialism, Rwandans lived peacefully, but the seeds of hatred were planted by colonialists.

He reminded the participants that ethnic divisions were originally based on ones’ economic status.

"If you had many cows in your family they could name you a Tutsi while your brother without any cattle could be named a Hutu. These were just names given to differentiate people’s economic status,” he said. 

Saidati Mukamunana, one of the participants attributed rape and defilement cases in villages to Genocide ideology.
