Youths account for close to 67 percent of Rwanda’s total population. This huge percentage of the total population cannot be ignored when it comes to sex education.

Sadly, however, many parents would rather discuss any other topic as long as it isn’t sex education.

According to an article in last week’s New Times, youth who don’t attend school are the ones that fall victims of teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases.

This comes as a result of parents neglecting to open up to their children about sex education.

Parents should take more responsibility than even teachers because their children are more accountable to them.

Of what benefit would it be to lose a child just because you weren’t able to tell them the truth about sex?

Not talking about the sexual changes an adolescent undergoes as they are becoming adults will only worsen matters because the child will get confused.

They will get to know about everything from their peers and the mass media and this will guarantee a bad result.

In this crazy world filled with cross generational sex and what not, parents should equip their children with knowledge about how to guard themselves from being exploited.

‘Shy’ parents will always regret their error, of not talking to their children. when their children land into uncalled-for sexual trouble.

More than anyone else it’s your role- don’t neglect your responsibility as a parent.
