KAYONZA — Police in Kayonza District are on the search for people who allegedly killed a suspected thief last week.
The deceased identified only as Mutsindashayka, 35, is said to have tried to steal commodities in a market in Mukarange Sector.

Eye witnesses, said the deceased was handed over to the irate mob by one of the traders. The Sector Executive Secretary, Leonard Kiwanuka, confirmed the incident, cautioning residents to desist from such actions.

"A group of irate residents of Kayonza administered mob justice to a suspected thief in which the suspect died on the spot. But this must end, it is inhuman and shameful,” Kiwanuka said.

Police say they were taken by surprise since mob justice is not common in the district.

"We don’t encourage mob justice and in this case the attackers should be charged with murder,” security officials said.

Other sources said the mob quickly dispersed after killing the deceased.

"They could have known the repercussions after killing the suspect, as they all scattered and ran away before the police arrived,” the source said.
