Women football fans will have to wait a little longer before the national league for the 2009/10 season kicks off.

According to the local football federation Chief Executive Officer Jules Kalisa, the new season will start on November 29.

Speaking to Times Sport yesterday, Kalisa said that the main reason the women season will not start at the same time as the men’s is that there are few teams in the women’s league yet the federation wants all the leagues to end at the same time.

"There are only eight teams in the women league and even then there are no international breaks for them like their male counterparts.

"Yet the leagues have to end on the same date, which is why we decided to delay the start of the women league,” Kalisa said.

AS Kigali won last year’s league title on goal difference [they beat APR to the title] and this coming season promises to be more competitive with four clubs; AS Kigali, APR, Musanze and Aspej vying for the title.

Meanwhile AS Kigali coach Grace Nyiranumuntu told this paper that she is looking to build on last year’s squad in the transfer market.

"We want to retain the league title and the best way to do that is to add other quality players to the team. I want to sign six players including three strikers, two midfielders and two defenders,” she said.
