Tour of Kigali to cover 145km

Over 50 riders including girls are expected to grace this year’s Tour of Kigali that will kick off September 20 at Amahoro stadium.

According to the organizers [Rwanda Cycling Federation], Tour of Kigali is a groundwork race to prepare local cyclists for the prestigious Tour of Rwanda which starts on November 23.

For the Tour of Kigali, cyclists will ride around Kigali city three times. The whole route will cover a total distance of 145km. But the girls will compete for 90km.

Seven clubs; Huye, Rapide, Rubavu, Cine Elmay, Rwamagana, Kayonza and Unatave have already confirmed their participation.

However, prizes for winners have yet to be decided, but the president of the national cycling federation, Aimable Bayingana said that they [prizes] will be attractive.

"We are yet to decide on the prizes for the winners, but they will be parallel to what we gave out during the Kwita Izina race.

"The event will be very competitive since the riders will be looking to impress ahead of Tour of Rwanda, which will be graced by international cyclists,” Bayingana said.

Abraham Ruhumuriza, who won the Kwita Izina race bagged Rwf500.000, while the second, third, fourth and fifth got Rwf450,000, 400,000, 350,000 and 300,000 respectively.
