Local girls’ tennis star Gisele Umumararungu won the U-14 CAT/ITF East Africa tennis tournament yesterday at Cercle Sportif, Rugunga in Kigali city.

Umumararungu emerged the winner after winning all her seven ties played in the round robin basis.

In her campaign to win the tournament, the youngster defeated the Kenyan trio of Damaris Mussera 6-2 7-6, Cherry Fouasso 6-4, 6-2 and Melissa Oriedi 6-4, 6-4 respectively.

She also beat Burundi’s Anitha Nzeyimana 6-1, 6-1 and Sifa Harelimana 6-0, 6-0.  In her last two matches, the 14-year-old defeated her compatriots Olive Uwineza and Olive Tuyisenge in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-1.

The teenager also combined with Uwineza to win the doubles category after winning three matches.

The pair defeated Mussera and Oriedi 6-1, 7-5, Nzeyimana and Harelimana 6-4, 6-3 and Tuyisenge with Melissa 6-2, 6-4 respectively.
