NYAGATARE — Umutara Polytechnic University’s veterinary medicine department plans to carry out  research on veterinary ethno medicine.

In an interview with The New Times, Dr. Elia Bukenya, the acting dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, said that they intend to carry out research on how traditional veterinary medicine can be incorporated into scientific based medicine in treating animals.

"We have agreed with the East Africa Dairy Development (EADD) project on the financial assistance of this initiative and possibly the research component will kick off early next year,” he said.

Dr. Bukenya noted that the research will be carried out on a wider range of issues whose main focus will be on ensuring that traditional veterinary medicine can also be considered scientifically.

"We want to carry out research on how traditional veterinary medicine can be used to treat our animals,” he said.

He added that the research  will involve a  final year student of veterinary medicine and other staff members.
The university has only 12 students in the final year taking veterinary medicine.
