RUBAVU - The tripartite police cooperation involving Sweden, South Africa and Rwanda under the democratic policing project, has announced plans to launch the third phase of the seven-year old project.

This was discussed at the meeting that took place at Lake Kivu, Serena Hotel, which brought together senior police officers from the three countries and representatives of the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA).

"We are happy that this cooperation has proved to be a success since 2003 in its two phases and we are to agree on the third phase of this project in this meeting,” the Acting Commissioner Genearal of Police, Mary Gahonzire told The New Times.

According to Gahonzire, the cooperation was initiated by the Rwanda National Police to draw experience from the police forces of Sweden and South Africa.

"This police development cooperation was established to strengthen the institutional capacity of Rwanda national police to deliver quality services to the community as a professional force based on democratic values with respect of rule of law and human rights,” Gahonzire added.
