RUSIZI - The Minister of state for Primary and Secondary Education, Mathias Harebamungu, has urged local leaders to work closely with the government, in the implementation of the Nine-year Basic Education programme.  

Addressing Rusizi and Nyamasheke district leaders at Groupe Scolaire in Rusizi yesterday, the Minister asked the leaders to mobilise residents to construct classrooms which he said is one of the serious challenges in the education sector. 

"I appeal to you leaders to employ all possible means to implement the nine year basic education program by rallying residents behind it,” he said, adding that the construction of classrooms should be complete before the end of the year.  

The Rusizi District Mayor, Fabien Sindayiheba, said the district requires 182 latrine toilets and 85 classrooms, while Nyamasheke requires 63 classrooms and 240 latrine toilets.  
During the same meeting, sector executive secretaries from the two districts disclosed that 60% of the construction work has been completed.

The Minister added that local leaders should feel they are part and parcel of government programmes.

He also implored teachers to ensure quality education in their respective schools.
