NGORORERO – Mechtilde Mukakiberwa, the former Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs, has been appointed the acting Mayor of Ngororero District, until by-elections are held.

Mukakiberwa was unanimously elected by the District Advisory Council on Tuesday at the district headquarters.

She replaces Cyprien Nsengimana who was sentenced to five years in prison over embezzlement of public funds.

The council meeting also resolved to study grievances of district officials who claim to have been ill-treated by the former district head, who is said to be on the run.

The provincial governor, Célestin Kabahizi, cautioned district leaders against involvement in criminal acts.

"Because of corruption, the former mayor and his deputy dismissed themselves from service and you should all desist from this,” Kabahizi warned.

In a subsequent interview, Mukakiberwa pledged to emulate other outstanding leaders and work with residents to elevate the status of the district.

"I am glad that they have entrusted me with the responsibility of taking on the leadership of the district’s administration, I promise that everything will go according to set plans,” she said.
