Rose Ngabire, Chief Operations Officer at Bank of Kigali, emphasized the importance of empowering women and fostering a culture of equality, highlighting the tireless efforts of women, particularly those in leadership roles. She encouraged all women to believe in themselves and continue working hard.
She also urged women to support one another, noting that they are more attuned to each other’s struggles and challenges. She called on colleagues to go beyond superficial greetings and take the time to check in on fellow women, offering support and encouragement, especially during tough times.
"Women can tell when another woman is going through something, right? More than a man. So if you see a fellow woman struggling, don&039;t just stop there and walk off. Invite her to your office. Give her water. Ask her, ‘How are you?’ Take a few minutes. Not just the corridor hi-hi,” she said.
She called on leaders within the organization to mentor young women, adding that mentorship, emotional resilience, and knowledge-sharing are critical for building a strong foundation for future female leaders.
"What will our legacy be—the women executives, the women HODs who are here today? What will our legacy be if we don’t create that pool where women can thrive and be the leaders of tomorrow?” she asked.
Ngabire urged the bank’s executives and department heads to commit to this cause to ensure that women can lead the way toward a brighter, more equitable future.
According to Sarah Mutawogora, Head of Culture Transformation at Bank of Kigali, the bank creates an environment where women feel empowered and supported adding that the bank offers equal opportunities and flexible policies, especially for mothers.
"Bank of Kigali gives me the space to have a mother’s room, and childcare. Bank of Kigali tells me that I have equal opportunity, "she said.
She also acknowledged the bank’s progress while stressing the need for more mentorship and leadership programs for young emphasizing on the importance of developing confidence in younger women within the organization.
"If the bank can continue to support young girls at a lower level through coaching, mentorship, and leadership programs, it’s something they can continue to work on, for my fellow women actions start with you and opportunities won't force themselves on you, you have to chase them,” she added.
