RWANDA succumbed to a premature exit from the Cecafa-Bashir Youth Championship after Monday’s 1-all draw against defending champions Burundi at Sudan’s Wad Medani stadium.

Foster Usengimana gave Rwanda a first half lead but Burundi leveled the score in the second half through Mavogu Laudit’s free kick.

Laudit’s strike was too much for Rwanda’s goalie Emery Mvuyekure who could only watch the ball race into the net.

The draw meant that Burundi and Eritrea progressed from Group C on the count of goals scored.

Burundi scored three goals; Eritrea scored two while Rwanda managed one.

Elsewhere, Uganda’s Hippos suffered a 0-1 loss at the hands of Zanzibar but still sailed into the quarter-finals as group B leaders on superior goal difference.

Uganda finished top of the group with six points, level with Zanzibar but ahead of the Islanders with an eight goal advantage.

Tanzania confirmed their top rating in Group A when they soaked Somalia 2-0 at Khartoum Stadium.

The win placed the Serengeti Boys on top of the Group with maximum points (nine) and will now play Ethiopia in Wednesday’s quarter-final tie.

In other quarter-final ties, Uganda will battle guests Malawi on Thursday while defending champions Burundi will play against hosts Sudan on Friday. Eritrea will also play Zanzibar on Friday.
