RWAMAGANA - An official of the National Electoral Commission (NEC) in the province has urged local leaders to start sensitising residents on elections in order to ensure successful 2010 presidential elections.  

Addressing local leaders, at the provincial headquarters in Rwamagana, last week, Frank R. Kayiranga, the electoral commission coordinator in the province, noted that local leaders are key to fair elections.

"We have gathered here to start fresh preparations for the 2010 presidential elections.

It is high time local leaders realised that we are not far from the elections. They are the prime players in the election process and should start pondering how to handle the situation,” Kayiranga said.

He disclosed that the electoral commission will soon start refresher courses for election volunteers in the area. 

Aline Mukantabana, the provincial Executive Secretary called on sector leaders to be ready to take part in the efforts.

"We are all volunteers; we do it to help our country develop.We have to get the right people to help us in the elections.

We are approaching elections, no time to sleep. It is therefore upon you to deliver or fail,” she said. 

At the meeting however, some sector leaders expressed concern over the delays in starting preparations.

"We should have started earlier to avoid any inconveniences of last minute preparations,” Antoine Rusingizandekwe, the Ruhuha Sector Executive Secretary remarked.
