RWAMAGANA - Radio Rwanda yesterday officially launched its community broadcasting programmes in Rwamagana and Kayonza districts.

The radio station is expected to operate for four days in Eastern Province before shifting to other provinces. 

The acting Director General of Radio Rwanda, Willy Rukundo told The New Times that the over all aim is to reach the remotest parts of the country. 

"We intend to push our tentacles to the villages so that Rwandans can be part and parcel of our radio station.

Coverage has been insufficient and hence  this trial is intended to evaluate our set plans ,” Rukundo said. 

During the live broadcast, the Rwamagana Mayor, Valence Ntezirembo, who fielded a number of questions from listeners, said that extending the services nearer the people was timely. 

"The radio is actually helping us to tell Rwandans how much we have accomplished.  Such programmes should be consistent so that our people can communicate with their leaders for mutual benefits. We do not need to go to Kigali anymore,” Ntezirembo said. 

The radio has attracted quite a number of listeners in the districts, most of whom have seized the opportunity to air their grievances. 

"I have had an issue with authorities for the last five years that I want to air out.

How can I hold an issue for five years and no body is ready to intervene?”  an old woman carrying a heap of documents shouted.
