After reading that Rwanda’s ICTR genocide archives are destined to be kept in Kenya, I am pretty mad. Following an article on Wednesday in The New Times, I say the decision was not well thought through.

No matter what the ICTR has in mind, it is only obligatory and realistic that Rwanda’s genocide archives be kept in Rwanda.

Given the fact that one of the top genocide perpetrators and financiers Felicien Kabuga is believed to be hiding in Kenya, there are no risks to take by throwing away precious evidence to a not so secure place. 

With all due respect, the ICTR needs to make things clear; instead they should focus on arresting Kabuga and other genocidaires out there instead of ripping open the healing wounds of the past.

Since they had promised and agreed back then in 2006, about returning the archives to Rwanda once their activities are over, they should keep their word.

Otherwise, a clear and sensible explanation should be given as to why they cannot do so. It is only out of courtesy that they do so.
