KAYONZA - A woman who allegedly attempted to poison her young step son has been arrested and detained at Ndego police station in Kayonza District.

Odette Nyirangendahimana, of Kabeza village in Ndego Sector, was caught red-handed trying to serve Samuel Tuyisenge, 11, pawpaw laced with rat poison, according to the boy’s father, Paul Kanyamugenga.

"I am actually shocked and if she is released, I won’t stay with her again in the same house.

This is dangerous and indeed a shameful person to live with,” said the seemingly angry father.

A security official in Ndego, who confirmed the arrest, narrated that the suspect was found with the poison in her hand, which he said is an exhibit sufficient to pin her.

The villagers revealed  that Nyirangendahimana  prior to her arrest had admitted to the crime.

However, talking to The New Times, she denied any wrong doing.

Elders in the sector say that the issue of food poisoning and witchcraft has been rife in the village.
