APR step up preps for All Africa Military Games

AFTER a month’s training camp in the Northern Province, APR athletes have now embarked on vigorous training in Kigali as they gear up for the 2nd edition of the All Africa Military Games set for September 18-October 1 in Abuja, Nigeria.

The seven-man team includes Jean Baptista Simuceka, Eric Sebahire, Gervais Hakizimana, Godfrey Rutayisire, Lambert Nyabamikazi, Claudette Mukasakindi and Genessi Nyirahabimana.

The team’s head coach Innocent Rwabuhihi said that the athletes will compete in four categories; 1500m, 5,000m, 10,000m, and 3,000m steeple chase.

Other sporting disciplines to be competed in include; football, handball, basketball, volleyball, judo, taekwondo, boxing, swimming, badminton, shooting, golf and table tennis.

APR is the sports wing of the Rwanda Defense Forces (RDF) and will have to contend with the likes of South Africa, Algeria, Angola, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Benin, Kenya, Chad, Botswana, Lesotho, Togo, Burkina Faso, Libya, Tunisia, Burundi, Madagascar, Zambia, Cameroon, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Cape Verde, Mali, Central Africa Republic, Mauritania, DR Congo, Morocco, Congo, Namibia, Ivory Coast, Niger, Djibouti, Nigeria, Egypt, Uganda, Gabon, Gambia, Senegal, Ghana and Sierra Leone in Abuja.
The 3rd edition of the Military Games will be staged in South Africa in 2011.
