KAMONYI - Jean Paul Munyandamutsa, the former Kamonyi District Mayor, resigned his position after being implicated in a land grab scandal, the District Council has said.

Council chairman, Aaron Vuganeza, on Monday told reporters after a meeting held to discuss the resignation that, Munyandamutsa, was a poor administrator and was cited in land grab scandals.

Munyandamutsa is alleged to have grabbed residents’ plots of land in Gacurabwenge, Mugina, and Kayenzi sectors.

The allegations were discovered by a council commission which was set up by the province to investigate the allegations.

Earlier, the council threw out reporters from the meeting.
The former Mayor had asked for leave to travel abroad.

But in a turn of events, last week he sent an email to the council in which he indicated that he was stepping down, citing personal reasons.

In the meantime, the meeting approved Munyandamutsa’s resignation and appointed Jacques Rutsinga, the vice Mayor in-charge of economic affairs as acting Mayor.

This is pending elections of a new Mayor in three months time.
