Steven Katwiremu was yesterday crowned 2007 Mutzig Open Champion after carding 143net in the two-day event which attracted 72 golfers at Kigali Golf Club.

The handicap 03 player produced a stellar performance playing 5-under with birdies at holes 2,4,6 and 9 netting 67 at the end of day one(Saturday).

And though he was below his best on the last day after registering 76net, his day-one performance was enough to see-off his closest challenger Jack Kayonga who finished second after carding 150net.

Gavin Cooper carded 157net to dominate the event’s second category (handicap 10-18) while the club’s ex-lady captain Christine Ledeau registered 69 points to finish top in the ladies’ category.

Playing as scratch players, Jean Baptiste Hakizimana recovered from a poor day-one display to scoop the national team top prize after beating Olivier Munyaneza on count-back.

Having played 78 gross on day one, the country’s top amateur golfer corrected Saturday’s and Namibia (All Africa Challenge Cup) ‘s poor show with some fine golf on day two that included the tournament’s longest drive.

He notched 69 gross and an overall 147 gross to edge Munyaneza on count-back.

Other Open winners included Christine Ledeau (ladies’ category) and Francois Rugomboka (handicap 19-28).

After the two-day action, the club president Ezra Bunyenyezi hailed the tournament sponsors (Bralirwa) for their handsome sponsorship package and good atmosphere and golfers for the stiff competition exhibited throughout the two-day competition.

Bralirwa’s commercial director Rene Kruijt who was also standing in for the company’s managing director Doors Plantenga also thanked golfers and Kigali Golf Club in general for making the tournament an exciting one.

"We have had two days of great golf and excitement and we (Bralirwa) promise to keep this tournament running for many years top come,” Kruijt assured the club.
