BURERA — The district has stepped up a campaign against drug abuse, in order to reduce domestic violence and other related crimes, police and local authorities said.
The District Police Commander, Supt. Carlos Kabayiza, and the vice Mayor Joseph Zaraduhaye, said last week after destroying 2300 litres of the illegal local brew locally called kanyanga, and over 800 cartons of chief waragi including a consignment of marijuana. The items were impounded over the last three months.
Kabayiza, said that drug abuse ranks second among the common crimes in the district. He blamed domestic violence and hooliganism on drug abuse.
Many Cyanika residents gathered to witness the destruction of the illicit drugs.
It has been reported that most of the drugs are sneaked into the country from neighbouring countries namely the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
Zaraduhaye noted that drug trafficking affects the lives of residents and the economy of the country at large.
