After five years without competing in any regional tournament, the national Under-20 handball team is set to take part in next month’s East Africa U-20 tournament which will be staged in the Burundian capital, Bujumbura.

About six years years ago, handball was one of rapidly growing sport in the country, but in the last three years, it has been on the decline.

The national league has six teams; APR, Police, UNR, KIE, SFB and Gicumbi. These are the same teams that have been in the league since 2006.

The Technical Director of the national handball federation, Antoine Ntabanganyimana said the national team is under rigorous training and that they expect a good performance at the regional tournament.

"The boys have been in training for the last few weeks and we expect a good performance from them,” Ntabanganyimana said.

The tournament whose dates have not been set, is expected to attract five countries including; Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and hosts Burundi.
