Editor,

I would like to react to Rwanda Medical Council’s decision of increasing the annual subscription fees for its members.

I am a medical doctor and this should automatically make me a member of this body; and it so happens that every member pays an annual contribution towards the daily running of the council’s activities.

This fee has in the recent times been at 15,000 francs for nationals and 150 dollars for non nationals per annum and this was quite affordable given the low salary scales for doctors in Rwanda.

This fee in question has since this year been hiked to 60,000 francs for reasons only known to the executive committee members since there were no prior consultations and/or communication for the general assembly.

Is RMC forgetting that its members earn low salaries? Have they forgotten that there are several other deductions from our salaries?

To me I think the council is unfair and should re consider this decision because it is too much.

I think it is an abnormal increment.

Well, it could even be for genuine reasons but I think the general assembly should be involved because they are the ones to pay at the end of the day.
